Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and BG Hospitals are developing the capacity of the Unbroken National Rehabilitation Center in Lviv. They are providing the centre with modern, state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment commensurate with the needs of the patients.\r
\r
Context\r
\r
Huge numbers of victims of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine have had to have limbs amputated or have sustained serious orthopaedic injuries. This is having considerable physical, mental and social impacts on the patients but also major consequences for the economy and society. At present, only a few medical institutions in Ukraine are able to offer these patients quality-assured, evidence-based medical rehabilitation.\r
\r
The project is closely linked to other hospital partnerships and to German–Ukrainian activities for the Unbroken Rehabilitation Center.\r
\r
Activities\r
\r
-\tNeeds assessment:\r
o Evaluating capacity (including available rooms, number of doctors and therapists) and the anticipated number of patients and their treatment needs\r
o Evaluating the need for modern rehabilitation equipment\r
o Selecting suitable devices\r
-\tProcurement:\r
o Carrying out award procedures\r
o Delivering the purchased devices to the Unbroken Rehabilitation Center\r
-\tFollow-up: Exploring the possibility of participating in the project activities of other hospital partnerships (e.g. Aurora, Solomiya)\r
\r
Results\r
\r
The Unbroken Rehabilitation Center has modern, state-of-the-art equipment in the field of post-injury rehabilitation in traumatology, orthopaedic rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery, and neurorehabilitation after post-traumatic neuropathy and brain injuries. As a result of its enhanced capacity, it is now able to provide urgently needed rehabilitation and treatment services to more patients. \r
