The German organisation Global EMS Entwicklungshilfe gGmbH is working with the Dominica Fire and Ambulance Service (DFAS) to improve the responsiveness of the emergency services in the small Caribbean island nation of Dominica so that emergency patients receive fast, professional and free initial treatment before they are admitted to hospital.\r
\r
Background: \r
Up to 70 per cent of deaths on Dominica are attributable to non-communicable illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic respiratory conditions, or accidents. The risk of patients in acute emergency situations dying or suffering severe, permanent injury could be significantly reduced by improving the responsiveness of the emergency services. \r
\r
Activities:\r
-\tJoint workshop by the partners on developing training courses for paramedics in service \r
-\tTraining for instructors in emergency medical assistance, including stabilisation of trauma patients, resuscitation, obstetrics and neonatal care\r
-\tDevelopment and introduction of standardised patient assessments and handover protocols\r
\r
Impact: \r
By participating in an ongoing programme of theoretical and practical medical training, paramedics on Dominica can improve their ability to administer emergency treatment as first responders. The introduction of patient reports and handover protocols enables patient care to be improved. This benefits the island’s entire population.
