The long-standing engagement of University Hospital Bonn to improve obstetrics in Eritrea is to be extended to include a cooperation arrangement with the Eritrean Ministry of Health. In the project, prenatal and postnatal care is to be improved at the regional hospital in Keren, the country’s second largest city.

Problem: To guarantee the health of expectant mothers and their children, medical care before and during childbirth is to be improved. Training courses and the introduction of hygiene standards have already significantly improved the neonatal situation. These measures are now to be expanded to cover obstetrics.

Main activities: University Hospital Bonn is training local doctors and nurses in the field of obstetrics inside Ethiopia, and with them new structures are being put in place to improve antenatal and neonatal care.

Short-term results: Intrapartum care and neonatal care is to be improved at Keren regional hospital.

Long-term results: Maternal mortality is to be reduced sustainably.
