The partnership project between Afrikas Renaissance und Wiederaufbau e.V. and the Soeurs Congolaises de l´Immaculée Conception aims to prevent epidemics of infectious tropical diseases and sexually transmissible diseases.
Problem: In the province of Mai-Ndombe, the population is badly affected by tropical, primarily endemic infectious diseases. Treatable and preventable infectious diseases such as malaria, cholera, hepatitis, AIDS and other sexually transmissible diseases are also becoming more prevalent, and the region is a high-risk area for Ebola. In rural areas in particular, few measures are taken to prevent endemic diseases or epidemics. There is a lack of knowledge about the transmission channels of infectious diseases and a lack of understanding of basic hygiene among the population.
Main activities: To prevent endemic diseases and epidemics, medical professionals are to be trained by specialists and are to act as multipliers. The trained experts are to communicate to the population the knowledge they lack regarding transmission channels and hygienic principles, as well as treating those that become sick, and handling emergencies.
Short-term results: The partnership helps build a decentralised preventive health and health care system.
Long-term results: Endemic diseases are to be prevented by education campaigns and the number of people affected by infectious diseases is to be reduced.
