The joint project of the Katholisches Klinikum Koblenz-Montabaur gGmbH and the Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja supports the creation of treatment options for polio patients.
Problem: Nigeria is thought to be home to about 63% of all individuals living with polio in Africa. The problem of providing adequate care to patients is unresolved. There is a lack of necessary treatment and aids to enable people to take part in public life and to earn their living.
Main activities: Within the scope of the partnership, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, orthopaedic technicians and doctors will each be able to shadow colleagues for two weeks. This will take place on the facilities of both the Nigerian and the German partner. Information and training events for people with polio will also be held at Cedarcrest Hospital.
Short-term results: Training for medical staff is to expand their expertise and skills in providing care for people with polio.
Long-term results: The establishment and start-up of a polio centre at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja is to ensure lasting high quality care for polio patients.
