The partnership project between Heidelberg University Hospital and the Etablissement Hospitalier Universitaire d'Oran in Algeria aims to enhance patient safety in Algerian hospitals by introducing national quality guidelines. The partner hospital cooperates with national authorities to achieve more robust cooperation among Algerian health facilities.

Problem: In spite of the government’s huge efforts, Algeria still suffers quality gaps in the supply of medical care. The main reason is the lack of national guidelines on patient care.

Main activities: The project partners are working together on courses for teaching staff at the partner university. The courses focus mainly on patient safety. Courses are also being organised for the staff of the partner hospital. Within the framework of the project, colleagues together draw up quality guidelines for the various units within the hospital, based on international standards.

Short-term results: By introducing new standards, patient safety at the partner hospital is to be enhanced.

Long-term results: Thanks to the affiliation with the university, the new guidelines are to be passed on to medical students. The project vision is to encourage the establishment of national standards in medical care.
