The continuation of the hospital partnership between Dentists for Africa e.V. and Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph Asumbi aims to improve dental care in Kenya by acquiring equipment for dental clinics, conducting training courses and treating school children.

Background:
Compared to other health problems in Kenya, dental care is extremely neglected, despite the fact that untreated conditions have severe consequences. Children primarily suffer from damage caused by poor nutrition and a lack of oral hygiene. However, many people in Kenya have virtually no access to dental care and know little about looking after their teeth and maintaining oral health. The aim of the project is therefore to expand dental care and make it more accessible and affordable.

Activities:
-\tAcquiring two treatment units and an X-ray machine
-\tImplementing treatment programmes in schools
-\tProviding two training sessions for students and dentists in X-ray diagnostics, prophylaxis and compiling patient and treatment data

Impact:
The planned treatment programmes in schools are designed to give 2,000 school children access to dental diagnostics and treatment and educate them about oral hygiene in an effort to reduce the prevalence of tooth decay in schools. The partnership’s long-term aim is to expand comprehensive dental care for the Kenyan population.
