Saint Francis Hospital, Mutolere, and Hanover Medical School are working together to improve gynaecological care and obstetrics in south-west Uganda.
Context: The maternal and newborn mortality rate is much higher in Uganda than in Germany. One of the reasons for this is the frequency with which high-risk caesarean sections are performed. The State of the World's Midwifery report finds that two-thirds of deaths during childbirth could be averted by competent midwives. A standard approach helps midwives to assess critical health conditions.
Activities:
-\tProcurement of technical equipment for the hospital in Mutolere and nearby health centres to enable them to participate in online training
-\tIntroduction of a standardised procedure in day-to-day obstetrics at Mutolere hospital and in the health centres in Kisoro
-\tCase training during reciprocal visits by the hospital partners to Germany and Uganda
Result:
Gynaecological care and obstetrics at Saint Francis Hospital Mutolere are a standard part of the everyday practice at the hospital. The teaching staff at Mutolere Training Centre have a sound knowledge of obstetrics and act as multipliers. Women benefit from optimised health care during pregnancy and childbirth.
