The hospital partnership between the University Hospital of Munich (LMU) and the Cardiac Center Ethiopia at the Black Lion Hospital aims to raise treatment standards in paediatric cardiology and paediatric intensive care in order to improve treatment for children in Addis Ababa with heart defects.
Context:
Congenital heart defects are among the most common abnormalities in children and young people. Building on another project of the hospital partnerships (2110063), which seeks to provide cardiac catheter procedures for children, there is further scope for improving intensive care for young patients at the Black Lion Hospital. There is a need for relevant expertise in paediatric intensive care in order to reduce the number of preventable deaths among newborns, children and young people.
Activities:
- Analysis of the most common paediatric heart conditions and creation of corresponding treatment plans
- Development of a medical database and establishing its use in daily hospital work
- Use of heart monitoring in day-to-day hospital care
- Training sessions with realistic scenarios
- Management of the paediatric intensive care unit based on the established treatment plans
Results:
Better treatment and monitoring of patients in the paediatric intensive care unit reduces complication and mortality rates. Establishing treatment plans, routine heart monitoring processes and a corresponding database will serve to mainstream the project results in the long term at the Black Lion Hospital in Ethiopia.
