The aim of the partnership between the Charite´ University Hospital Berlin and the Kandy Teaching Hospital in Sri Lanka is to implement a digital file system and set up an immunological diagnosis unit for kidney diseases at the Sri Lankan hospital.

Background:
Over the last decade, Sri Lanka has been overrun by a kidney disease epidemic which leads to chronic kidney failure. The cause for this is as yet unknown, but the condition is particularly prevalent among economically disadvantaged rice field workers. The creation of a digital patient record system is necessary given the increasing number of patients and more complex transplant cases. The training of hospital staff in diagnosis and in the implementation of new test methods is also necessary to establish different basic immunological tests in Sri Lanka.

Activities:
-\tHolding an on-site visit to determine the requirements for digital file systems
-\tDetermining the available testing infrastructure to carry out the test reports
-\tAcquiring the required hardware for the digital file system and test kits for immunological tests
-\tImplementing laboratory training in Germany

Impact:
The introduction of a digital file system and the setting up of an immunological diagnosis unit are intended to optimise teaching at the hospital and the quality of care for affected patients.
