The German non-profit organization, Kinder unserer Welt, and the Ethiopian NGO REST-Relief Society of Tigray are working together within the Mother-and-Child-Health Support (MCHS) project. They aim to achieve sustainable improvements in the health outcomes of families in the target region of Korarit and its surrounding areas in the Wolkait district.
Problem: Traditional practices including female genital mutilation (FGM), removal of the uvula, tattooing, early marriages, and early pregnancies are widespread. Limited knowledge about the health outcomes of hygiene and nutrient deficiencies are also attributed to parasitic infections and deficiency disorders among children.
Main Activities: Women’s Development Team Leaders (WDTL) will be qualified to advise families on a range of health issues and may be able to change the understanding of nutrition and hygiene habits as well as traditional practices, which can have harmful impacts on health. The WDTL also encourage the use of the Mother-Child-Health services in the Korarit health center.
Short-Term Effects: WDTLs are trained on nutrition and hygiene habits and advise families in the region.
Long-Term Effects: Attitudes and ways of life will be changed based on knowledge gained regarding general health concerns. Therefore, the health outcomes of families will be permanently improved.
