The partnership between GLG Klinikum Barnim GmbH Werner-Forßmann hospital and Gulu Regional Referral Hospital aims to improve patient care in Uganda. To this end, training courses for local hospital staff on the use of standardised regional anaesthesia procedures are to be conducted.

Background:
In Northern Uganda, which still suffers from the impact of the civil war that has continued since 2006, medical care is a huge challenge. The war has meant that an entire generation has been deprived of training opportunities, leading to a nationwide shortage of anaesthetists. The lack of expertise in anaesthesia means that many surgical procedures are conducted without adequate pain relief.

Activities:
-\tFive-day training in training multipliers, several times a year
-\tSupervision of training held by the multipliers
-\tRegional anaesthesia procedures performed in the emergency department and during operations
-\tPreparation of educational material for patients
-\tInclusion of the learning content in the medical students’ log book

Impact:
The training courses will help integrate standardised procedures into clinical routine, helping future patients benefit from pain-free operations. The project contributes to reducing morbidity and mortality during and after surgical procedures.
