The cooperation arrangement between the Medical Mission Institute Würzburg and the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania focuses on developing and introducing medical specialist training in anaesthetics.

Problem: In the whole of Tanzania there are only 20 fully trained anaesthetists. The disease and mortality rate resulting from the lack of anaesthetics is high across the entire country. The Bugando Medical Centre which is linked to the university also has only one anaesthetist.

Main activities: The development of a training programme for anaesthetists is the goal of the partnership project. Once a curriculum has been approved it is to be implemented with the support of international partners. Online learning modules are to be incorporated in the training plan. Doctors taking the specialist training are also to have the opportunity to undertake an internship in Würzburg.

Short-term results: Specialist medical training in anaesthetics is to be implemented.

Long-term results: By establishing a training course for medical specialists in anaesthetics, more anaesthetists are to be trained in future and patient safety improved.
