The assisted partnership project between the Endoscopy Futures Nigeria e.V. and Enugu State University College of Medicine aims to develop a gastrointestinal endoscopy training centre in Enugu, in south-eastern Nigeria.

Problem: AIDS and diarrhoeal diseases are a leading cause of death in Nigeria. There is also need for action in the fields of tuberculosis, hepatitis B and parasitic infestation. Endoscopic examinations are important for treating these conditions, but few doctors in Nigeria have endoscopy skills.

Main activities: For doctors and nursing staff at the partner hospital, workshops and online learning programmes are being held. Medical professionals are given the chance to spend time shadowing German colleagues at the Klinikum Augsburg. A documentation system is being put in place for the results of endoscopic examinations and the professional bodies in the two partner countries are pooling their knowledge and research findings.

Short-term results: The number of experts available to perform endoscopic examinations at the partner hospital is to be raised.

Long-term results: Training student doctors will enable the knowledge to be passed on and disseminated beyond the partner hospital, on a sustainable basis.
