The German\/Namibian project involving the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the University of Namibia aims to train Namibian healthcare staff in how to use imaging tests to detect cancer. This would involve Namibian clinic staff taking part in work shadowing schemes in Heidelberg, Germany.
Background:
There is a growing number of cancer patients in Namibia who are not diagnosed until their cancer has reached an advanced stage. This is because the country lacks the oncologists and radiologists needed to provide and carry out adequate early screening programmes. To ensure that patients can access the care they need, medical staff need to be trained in clinical radiology.
Activities:
-\tOffering basic ultrasound training at the German Cancer Research Center
-\tProviding training in medical ultrasound
-\tOffering basic MRI training at the German Cancer Research Center
Impact:
The aim of the project partnership is to expand the radiology services available to cancer patients in the Namibian capital, Windhoek. After completing their training in Heidelberg, the Namibian clinic staff act as multipliers for their colleagues, which should lead to a sustainable improvement in cancer care in Namibia.
