The partnership between Doctors for Madagascar and the Madagascan Ministry of Health Sampan'asa Loterana Momba'ny Fahasalamana (SALFA) aims to (1) ensure access to primary health care for pregnant women, children under the age of 5, tuberculosis and malaria patients, patients with life-threatening illnesses and accident victims by reducing financial barriers and improving protection against catastrophic health expenditures, (2) to strengthen the crisis resilience of health facilities affected by revenue losses through the partial assumption of treatment costs, and (3) to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases through public health education and the use of mobile clinics in remote areas.
The direct target groups are pregnant women, children under the age of 5, tuberculosis and malaria patients, as well as patients with life-threatening illnesses and accident victims who are treated at one of the partner facilities that are involved in the project. During the one-year project period, up to 15,000 patients are expected to benefit from improved access to primary health care and be directly protected from catastrophic health expenditures. The measures will help prevent economic distress from pandemic-related revenue losses for at least 8 health care facilities.
