The aim of the partnership between the Rostock University Medical Center and the Ho^pital Re´gional de Kindia in Guinea is to provide basic bacteriological diagnostics and implement training courses in rational antibiotic therapy for doctors at the referral hospital.

Background:
In recent decades, there has been an increase in resistance to antibiotics the world over. In some cases, antibiotics are sold by ‘mobile’ street vendors and even without a prescription in pharmacies in the Republic of Guinea, thereby increasing the incidence of antibiotic resistance.

Activities:
-\tEstablishing a laboratory and introducing laboratory technicians to routine bacteriological operations
-\tProviding annual training courses on the issue of antibiotic stewardship, the rational and responsible use of antibiotics
-\tProviding four training courses a year on the most common germs and resistances
-\tHolding discussions on recommendations regarding antibiotic therapy

Impact:
The establishment of bacteriology and resistance testing at the Ho^pital Re´gional de Kindia optimises the care given to Guinean patients as the therapy can be adapted based on the improved evaluation of bacteriological results. Side effects and the development of further resistances can thus be prevented.
