The partnership between the Rechts der Isar Hospital in Munich (MRI) and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is aiming to introduce minimally invasive care (MIC) measures for gynaecological disorders at the partner hospital in Kumasi, Ghana.
Background:
In Ghana, there is a lack of emphasis on minimally invasive methods when it comes to gynaecological surgery. The advantages of such methods over conventional abdominal incisions include quicker recovery times for the patients, shorter periods of inpatient treatment and fewer post-operative complications.
Activities:
-\tProcuring the instruments needed for MIC and repairing faulty ones
-\tRunning a two-week training course on MIC techniques at MRI for two doctors and two nurses from KATH
-\tRunning a two-week work shadowing scheme at KATH involving MIC specialists from MRI and carrying out MIC operations jointly with doctors and nurses from KATH
-\tDeveloping standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Impact:
The aim is for the knowledge gained to be used to bring about a lasting change in the surgical treatment provided at KATH, which would also help reduce treatment costs and improve women’s quality of life. In the long term, an interdisciplinary MIC training centre is to be set up at KATH to support the transfer of knowledge to other specialist disciplines at the hospital.
