150 participants from 19 countries gathered at the International Medical Partnership Forum on October 9 and 10, 2025, to strengthen international cooperation in the health sector. The Hospital Partnerships funding programme was represented by team leader Jan-Patrick Ostrowski, who signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Health Minister Viktor Liashko on closer cooperation between German and Ukrainian healthcare institutions.

The International Medical Partnership (IMP) initiative dates back to the third Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen in 2023, where the first memoranda of understanding were signed between Ukrainian healthcare institutions and partner institutions from around the world.

The Hospital Partnership Program brings a growing network of German-Ukrainian hospital partnerships to the initiative, in which healthcare professionals from 35 German and 100 Ukrainian hospitals and medical non-governmental organizations are already working together to stabilize and further develop the Ukrainian healthcare system under war conditions and prepare it for EU accession. German-Ukrainian hospital partners work together on key issues such as rehabilitation, mental health, surgery, emergency medicine, infection control, pediatric heart surgery, breast cancer screening, hospital management, and much more.

Since 2022, hospital partnerships in Ukraine have trained and educated 10,000 healthcare professionals and helped 1,000,000 Ukrainian patients receive better treatment and care—and the numbers are growing every day.

Hospital partnerships are established through direct and continuous dialogue with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (MoH). Needs are identified and prioritized jointly so that tailor-made projects can be developed and implemented. Direct dialogue ensures that cooperation in hospital partnerships is targeted, impact-oriented, and always geared toward specific practical requirements. Veronika G., Head of International Medical Partnerships at the MoH, also emphasizes the success of this close cooperation:

“The coordination of Hospital Partnerships-supported projects in Ukraine is exemplary, demonstrating a clear alignment with national health priorities and ensuring that international support is well integrated into Ukraine’s healthcare strategy.”
